Bluetooth File Transfer is a tool that lets you exchange files between two Bluetooth-enabled devices. It's one of the many ways of sending a file from your Android phone or tablet to another device. Using Bluetooth has several advantages over other methods. Files can be exchanged between two devices that support Bluetooth file transfer without using a data cable of any kind. The devices don't need to be of the same type, brand or even be running the same operating system. You can just as easily exchange files between two Android smartphones as you would with a Windows PC that supports Bluetooth or a BlackBerry.

How Bluetooth Technology Works

Bluetooth is a way to connect two devices wirelessly. It can be used to connect accessories to a smartphone, but it can also send data. The Bluetooth File Transfer app creates a local wireless connection between the two devices. An Internet connection is not required, as the data is sent directly between them without using any kind of online service. This can be practical if you want to send a file to a friend or coworker without using up your data plan.

However, there is a slight drawback. Unlike other types of wireless networking technologies, Bluetooth requires that the two devices be within a few feet of each other. It sometimes works at longer ranges, but it isn't a practical way of sending data to everyone at home or in a larger office due to the low power of its signal having a short reach.

Using the App to Send and Receive Files

Bluetooth File Transfer has a simple interface that is free of any bells and whistles. There's one tab to send files and another to browse a remote device. Once you open the app, it will automatically enable Bluetooth on your Android device and start searching your surroundings for other Bluetooth-compatible devices. Bluetooth has to be enabled on the other device for it to be seen by your phone.

You can then select the files you want to send and accept the transfer on the remote device. The reverse works in a similar way, only this time you need to accept the incoming transfer on your phone. The app is generally reliable, although you may need to occasionally retry a transfer if the connection isn't made successfully the first time. Bluetooth File Transfer can be used with any type of file, including media files like songs and movies, compressed archives, documents, images and applications.
